Programme Overview

The Asia–UK Youth Cultural Exchange Programme is an international initiative supported by Birmingham City Council and delivered in partnership with leading UK cultural and educational institutions, including the BCU Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO).

Building on the successful launch of the China–UK Cultural Exchange Programme in 2025, the initiative has developed into a multi-country platform for its 2026 edition, welcoming over 200 young musicians, educators, and institutional representatives from across Asia, including China and Vietnam.

The 2026 programme reflects a broader and more diverse artistic and educational scope, extending beyond youth orchestra to include award-winning choirs, theatre and dance groups, alongside the introduction of a dedicated teacher and leadership delegation bringing together headteachers and music directors from leading schools across China and Vietnam.

The programme brings together leading schools, youth ensembles, and senior education leaders within a structured framework of performance, learning, and institutional exchange across the United Kingdom. Activities take place in major cultural venues including Town Hall Birmingham, Bradshaw Hall at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, alongside workshops, masterclasses, and collaborative projects with UK partners.

Programme Framework & Purpose

The programme is designed not simply as a series of events, but as a structured framework for sustained cultural and educational exchange between the UK and Asia.

At its core, the initiative connects students, educators, and institutions through a model that integrates performance, learning, and institutional collaboration. This enables engagement at multiple levels — from student experience to school partnership and leadership dialogue.

A key component of the programme is the development of a growing network of partner schools and organisations. UK institutions are invited to engage through hosting activity, collaborative projects, and the establishment of longer-term exchange relationships with leading schools across Asia.

Music remains the central connecting language, providing a shared platform for collaboration, while supporting broader dialogue across education, culture, and future areas of development.

Programme Framework & Purpose

Each year, the programme is delivered across multiple UK cities, combining performances in major cultural venues with collaborative workshops, masterclasses, and institutional engagement.

Participants perform in internationally recognised venues including Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall, Bradshaw Hall at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, alongside appearances within established UK festival settings such as the Ludlow Music Festival, and collaborative activity at the CBSO Centre.

Alongside performance, the programme places strong emphasis on collaboration. Participants engage in side-by-side activity with UK ensembles and young musicians, including full-day workshops, rehearsals, and joint performances. These projects are designed to support shared learning and meaningful artistic exchange.

The programme also facilitates direct engagement between partner schools, including dedicated collaboration days that bring students together through performance, cultural exchange, and informal interaction, supporting the development of long-term relationships.

In addition, the programme supports the creation of new work through commissions to emerging composers and artists, encouraging cross-cultural dialogue and the development of new artistic voices. Interdisciplinary collaboration is also explored across music, theatre, and movement, creating space for experimentation and shared creative practice.
